Area of expertise · Product governance maturity

Central platforms seldom fail in development; they fail in decision-making, often due to repeated exceptions and escalations.

This structured assessment evaluates the governance of a central product group across six dimensions: value, decision rights, stakeholder arbitration, platform leverage, embedded controls, and execution. It identifies where the organisation relies on manual effort rather than effective mechanisms.

What sets this apart from standard maturity surveys

A central platform is evaluated simultaneously by three groups: the board, which assesses value; supervisors, who examine controls; and teams, who seek clarity on decision-making. Most maturity surveys overlook these perspectives. This assessment addresses all three, recognising that in regulated, multi-stakeholder organisations, these concerns are interconnected. It is informed by practical experience in subscription businesses across European markets and regulated B2B data companies, where compliance, engineering, and commercial interests often diverge.

What it assesses

Six weighted dimensions. The report scores each one and names the gaps it finds.

  1. 1

    Value creation

Whether the platform's value is measured with metrics that drive roadmap decisions, or asserted in strategy documents and measured nowhere.

  2. 2

    Decision governance

Evaluates whether decision rights are clearly defined, and specifies who decides based on which criteria, and when escalation occurs, or if they are only identified during conflicts.

  3. 3

    Stakeholder alignment

Whether the structural tensions — speed versus control, central standard versus local requests — are arbitrated by mechanism or absorbed by the team.

  4. 4

    Platform leverage

Assesses whether the platform enables scalability or leads to duplication, considering the cost of adding capabilities and the extent of redundant logic.

  5. 5

    Embedded controls

Whether required controls live inside the product, measurable and reconstructable, or rest on manual processes with ambiguous risk ownership.

  6. 6

    Operating model

Assesses the team's ability to execute, including product management ownership, clear mandates, sustained priorities, and effective allocation of capacity.

The assessment

The assessment consists of fifteen questions across four screens. The resulting report provides an overall score, evaluates each of the six dimensions with identified gaps, highlights the most significant findings, explains the impact of supervisory changes on the profile, and outlines the underlying anti-patterns.

If the exposure sits in the payments setup itself rather than in the system governing it, the payments compliance assessment covers that ground.
